Movie Review: Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them
I had hopes high for Cursed Child, and it turned out to be nothing but a disaster. (Read my review here). I had made it clear in my mind then that I should not have high hopes for this one. I thought it would just be a wizard - magical creatures chase. But the movie was more than that.
As a stand alone movie, its boring. But considering that it is setting up the next 4 movies, I guess it did a fine job doing that. Its good that Newt won't be the protagonist in the next films. He is not such a great character, and you won't be able to fall in love with the character easily. He's down to earth, and he's boring. His no-maj friend, Mr. Kowalski, is a funny man. Though, most likely, he will not have a role to play in future.
I feel, that instead of bringing in Newt as the protagonist, we could've had some new character and would just see Newt as one of the characters. This would've let the audience focus more towards the actual story.
Now, to be honest, what actually the real story arc is, is a huge surprise, interesting and hard to guess. This movie gives the Dumbledore & Grindelwald's relationship a new dimension we never knew about. But that thing, how it fits into the wizarding world and what it has to do with Dumbledore and Grindelwald is still a mystery. The next movies will explore this further for sure, and they are going to be amazing adventures.
The actors are amazing. Eddie did a great job playing the character, just the character development itself was poor. Dan Fogler nailed playing Jacob Kowalski. Johnny Depp, though had a small role, played it just like we imagined Grindelwald would be like. Direction was not too good, unlike what we saw in the Harry Potter movies.
In the next few movies, I wish we visit Hogwarts once again, meet the younger Tom Riddle, know more about Ilvermorny. We learnt in the movie that Newt visited Africa recently during his search for fantastic beasts. This may connect to why Rowling revealed details about schools of Africa. Also, this hints that we might even visit Japan in future! The franchise has so many things to tell us !!
Overall Rating: 3/5
