RANKED: Koffee With Karan Season 5 (All Episodes) and Koffee Awards Discussion
Karan Johar is a big personality in Bollywood, and is in news throughout the year, be it for a controversy or release of a Dharma Production movie. He hosts TV Shows, writes, directs, and produces movies. He has given several hits as director including Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, and the latest Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. There were reports for a long time that Fawad Khan will be gracing his couch on the first episode of the 5th season, but because of worsening of India-Pak relationships and the controversies for the release of his latest directorial adventure, he must've changed his plans.
This is the first Koffee Season I've watched, but had heard a lot about the controversies these shows has caused. I was excited to watch this Talk Show, to know the off screen versions of the stars I adore. Some episodes were really really funny, while few bored the crap out of me.
I'll be rating the episodes under four categories:
Both of them were extremely entertaining. Also, its Karan Johar's personal favorite, as he revealed during the Koffee Awards. It, according to me, is the best episode of the season, regardless of what the jury had to say. They will leave you in splits without letting there be a single dull moment. (Watch the episode here).
And, they take a little revenge from the show's host too. Look out for that till the end. (Watch the episode here).
On the 100th episode, he indicated that Salman, Arbaaz and Sohail were 1-0-0. Though it for perfectly timed and creative, I feel Ranveer Singh or Katrina Kaif should've got this one for their VFX and Truth statements respectively. The way each of them delivered those lines were just amazing. Ranveer's statement was a reply to a statement Shahrukh gave earlier on the show, and it was just perfectly timed. The dialogues in the images below have been edited by the BuzzFeed editors.

EPISODES RANKED
I'll be rating the episodes under four categories:
- Excellent Episodes
- Good Episodes
- Average Episodes
- Not so good Episodes
EXCELLENT EPISODES
#1 RANBIR KAPOOR AND RANVEER SINGH
THE SHOW starts with Ranbir and Ranveer messing up in Karan's room, ultimately carrying one of his pair of shoes out to throw at him when required. We get to know Karan's weird choices of shoes.

#2 VARUN DHAWAN AND ALIA BHATT
BADRI AND HIS DULHANIYA, both were appearing for the second time on this season. They both returned to make us roll on the floor laughing. Varun's charm and Alia's cuteness makes this the second best episode of the season. They're just too adorable together.

#3 VARUN DHAWAN AND ARJUN KAPOOR
ONE OF THE most comedy episodes of the season, where we get to see the bromance between the two youngsters in Bollywood. They talk in some alien language, and make the acting segment the best thing to watch. We also get to see a small clip of their performance in acting school, and Varun unlike Arjun feels proud that it has made to the National Television. They demonstrate the peak siblings behaviour, and leave no moment to entertain you. (Watch the episode here).Photo Courtesy: Google |
#4 AKSHAY KUMAR AND TWINKLE KHANNA
THIS ONE EPISODE proves all the puns about husbands being dominated by their wives. It doesn't matter even if you're Akshay Kumar. The Bollywood Star with a big fanbase was silent through most of the episode, and his wife Twinkle Khanna stole the show. Akshay Kumar, in a romantic mood, sang a beautiful song for his wife, and danced with her. Twinkle on the other hand knew what to say and at what point. She was just amazing. No doubt she got the Best Debut Female Koffee Award. Its a super comedy and super romantic episode. (Watch the episode here).

#5 DIRECTOR'S SPECIAL
KARAN JOHAR is after all a director, and it all makes sense for him to sit with other directors and have a koffee. While watching this episode it feels that they all are just talking without thinking about the fact that they're on camera. Karan feels like just another director and not the host until the rapid fire round. They share their experiences while working on different projects, and its fun to know them. (Watch the episode here)
#6 THE KHAN BROTHERS
SALMAN KHAN's charm itself makes scriptless movies like Prem Ratan Dhan Payo to earn 200Cr on domestic box office. When the three brothers come together for the 100th episode of Koffee with Karan, the episode itself becomes a must watch. Though there are few dull moments in this one, the brothers soon light up the moments by sharing their stories. Though its rated the best episode by the jury, it comes at the 6th position on my list. (Watch the episode here).
GOOD EPISODES
#7 AAMIR KHAN WITH ON-SCREEN PHOGAT SISTERS
WE KNOW EACH of the Khan's personality very well, because they regularly come to other shows to promote their films, but Aamir Khan doesn't. I, for once, didn't know what Aamir Khan is actually like in real life. In this episode, we meet what Aamir Khan is like. How super emotional guy he is, who cries while watching his trailer for the first time. The guy who does not know how to lie. And, the box office record breaker needs some advice from Akshay Kumar to handle money. We also met his on-screen daughters, Fatima and Sanya. Overall, the episode was enjoyable. (Watch the episode here).
#8 SHAHRUKH KHAN AND ALIA BHATT
THE FIRST EPISODE of the season had many amusing parts, especially the acting segment Karan assigned to the two guests. You wouldn't want to miss the part when Shahrukh recites the nursery rhyme Marry Had a Little Lamb in Arnub Goswami style. Shahrukh Khan, who considers Alia just like his daughter, also gave her few advices including that she's being too good too soon. With the versatile and challenging roles Alia has chosen, despite being so new in the industry just proves Shahrukh right. This time, Alia Bhatt won the GK quiz, that too against Shahrukh Khan. Now, really, its time that we stop mocking her and appreciate what all she has achieved at the age of 24. Many of us can only dream of achieving that in a lifetime. Getting the President wrong in the Season 4 of this show was simply a slip of tongue, and there's no reason to make fun of her for small things like this. (Watch the episode here).

(Watch the episode here).#9 SHAHID KAPOOR AND MIRA RAJPUT
THIS COUPLE, though was not as entertaining as the Akshay-Twinkle one, but doesn't bore the viewers. Mira was really good for a first timer on any talk show. The couple revealed few secrets about their better halves. Their love for each other makes this episode good for a watch. (Watch the episode here).

#10 KAPIL SHARMA
KAPIL SHARMA, the best family comedian of the day, had tweeted back in November that he won the Koffee Hamper, and since then I kept on waiting for the episode to air. Each of the teasers had someone else than him. With rumors going around during February that his episode won't be aired really disappointed me. But finally, when it was revealed that he'll be the last guest, I was glad and excited. During the episode, along with Kapil's really good sense of humor, we witnessed his obsession/ crush for Deepika Padukone. She was mentioned quite a number of times in the episode, and anyone who frequently watches The Kapil Sharma Show wouldn't be surprised by this. Though we were expecting some insights on Kapil's personal life, there were hardly any. Kapil's weak english to his stupidity, all are part of this episode.

After the recent row he has had with Sunil Grover and Chandan, the most popular artists from his show, he might be wanting to add Don't Drink and Fight to this dialogue, and apply it to himself. I really wish everything gets fine between these comedians soon, and we can see Dr. Mashoor Gulati back on our TV. (Watch the episode here).
#11 ANUSHKA SHARMA AND KATRINA KAIF
KARAN JOHAR's second most favorite episode doesn't come on my list till 11th position. The episode was good, a bit funny, but at the same time Katrina was a bit irritating. She kept speaking, without stopping. Though it invoked humor, it felt that she's forcing it. This does reveal few secrets about the dream team, a bollywood team which performed in different places in US about a year back. Watch the episode to find out about those and the 'I Hate Katrina' Club started by Varun Dhawan and Arjun Kapoor. (Watch the episode here).
AVERAGE EPISODES
#12 SAIF ALI KHAN & KANGANA RANAUT
A KOFFEE WITH KARAN SEASON without creating any controversy is highly unlikely, and this episode was able to generate some. All of us must be aware what Kangana said about Karan Johar on the show, that he's the flag bearer of nepotism, didn't go well with Karan Johar, and he replied to her through some interview. His interview made it clear that Kangana was talking about some fictional Karan Johar, as Rohan states during the Koffee Awards.

Overall, the episode is an average one, if we remove the bold statements put forward by Kangana. (Watch the episode here).
#13 SIDHARTH MALHOTRA AND JACQUELINE FERNANDEZ
JUST ANOTHER EPISODE, with Sidharth and Jacqueline as guests. Nothing special about it. (Watch the episode here).#14 PARINEETI CHOPRA AND ADITYA ROY KAPUR
AN EPISODE with two really good friends as guests, with few PJs by Parineeti. Their chemistry looks like that of good friends, and not of potential love birds. Not something unique about the episode, thus ends up in the Average category. (Watch the episode here).
#15 JACKIE SHROFF AND TIGER SHROFF
IN THIS FATHER-SON DUO, the father shines more than his son. A fun-filled okay-ish episode makes it watchable for the Schroff fans. (Watch the episode here).
#16 PRIYANKA CHOPRA
PRIYANKA CHOPRA graces the couch as a single guest, straight from New York. Karan and Priyanka talk, share Koffee Shots, Race Against Time, and make it an average episode. (Watch the episode here).
NOT SO GOOD EPISODES
#17 KAREENA KAPOOR AND SONAM KAPOOR
WITH ARJUN KAPOOR having a cameo, all the Ks talk about different stuff, mostly boring. The only laughable in the episode was
There was a lot of talk about fashion and stuff. Watchable only if you're a fan of either of them. (Watch the episode here).
#18 FARAH KHAN AND SANIA MIRZA
IT IS A really boring episode, especially for a person like me, who can't understand the friendship between two totally different women. Oh yes, the two guests are really good friends. (Watch the episode here).
KOFFEE AWARDS
Finally after 18 episodes and 37 guests came the time to give away the awards. There was Jury consisting of 4 members with Malaika Arora as their head.
Let's see the categories and the winners.
BEST DRESSED
MALE
Winner: Ranbir Kapoor & Shahid Kapoor
They both were well dressed, but no one gets to beat Ranveer Singh though. His dressing sense is just unique. The Khan brothers too were very well dressed, but weren't even nominated.

FEMALE
Winner: Priyanka Chopra
I strongly oppose this winner, and even more strongly support Alia Bhatt for her second appearance. But, the final decision lies with the jury, anyway. We can't vote.

BEST DEBUT
MALE
Winner: Jackie Shroff
Well, no doubt that he graced the couch by his charm itself.
FEMALE
Winner: Twinkle Khanna
She deserved it, and won it. She was just amazing. But, considering that it was Mira's first talk show in her lifetime, she too did very well.
BEST ACTOR IN A COMIC ROLE
Winner: Varun Dhawan
He made us laugh twice in the season and helped the episodes be in the best of the season. Totally deserving. Equally deserving were Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor too though. The question is though, why was the king of comedy, Kapil Sharma, not even nominated?
SPECIAL KOFFEE AWARD
Winner: Arjun Kapoor
By sitting on the couch 4 times, and being an object to be kissed for 3 times, he got this award. This season was indeed Koffee with Karan Arjun, but alas, Shahrukh and Salman never appeared together here. After so many appearances, he should really come up with Alcohol with Arjun in between Karan's shows as he suggested.
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Winner: Kareena Kapoor
BEST LINE
Winner: Sohail Khan
On the 100th episode, he indicated that Salman, Arbaaz and Sohail were 1-0-0. Though it for perfectly timed and creative, I feel Ranveer Singh or Katrina Kaif should've got this one for their VFX and Truth statements respectively. The way each of them delivered those lines were just amazing. Ranveer's statement was a reply to a statement Shahrukh gave earlier on the show, and it was just perfectly timed. BEST PERFORMANCE
MALE
Winner: Salman Khan
For his charm and sense of humor, the award was given to the best male performer in the season.
FEMALE
Winner: Katrina Kaif
No. Just No. For me, the winner was Alia Bhatt. My points are quite similar to that of Neha and Rohan in jury, that she has gone through a lot because of Season 4 of this show and has improved herself a lot. Its not easy to crack jokes on yourself, and she did it confidently.
BEST EPISODE
Winner: The Khan Brothers
Well, as I rated above, I feel that there are 5 episodes better than this one. No doubt that this was great too, but I guess the views differ between me and the jury.
At the end, the season was really good. Since I haven't watched other seasons, I can't compare this. But, one thing is certain that I'll be looking forward to the 6th season. I hope Karan brings the celebrities he couldn't bring this time, especially Deepika Padukone, Hritik Roshan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and several others. Till Karan starts his next season, I hope Arjun was serious about Alcohol with Arjun thing. He can start it after the release of his film Half Girlfriend. It can be a nice spin-off!
